-US vs Union of Soviet Socialst Republics

- A political strategic and ideological struggle between the US and Soviet Union from 1945-1990

-Communism vs Democracy

- Socialism vs Capitialism

- Soviet- German Non- Agression Pact

- War with Germany

- Battle of Berlin - April- May 1945

- Lenin Dies, Stalin takes over

- Purges, Collectvization, Nationalization, 5 year plans

- The West and the East

-Pot WW2 Cold war goals for US

- Promote open Markets for US goods to prevent another depression, promote democracy throughout the world espically in Asia and Africa, stop the spread of communism

- Policy of Containment

Soviet Goals for the Cold War

- Wanted to create greater security for itself, encourage friendly governments on its borders, spread communism around the world

- Winston Churchill "Iron Curtain" Speech 1946, Europe has now been split, into two, communist and free

- Domino Effect- Eisenhower- 1954

Truman Doctrine

In 1947 the British were helping the greek government fight against communists

They appealed to America for aid

Greece received large amounts of weapons and supplies from US

By 1949, the communists were defeated

Marshall Plan

In 1947, the US announced the Marshall Plan

This was a massive economic aid plan for Europe to help it recover from WWII

Two Goals

  • Help Europe to recover economically which would help US recover economically
  • Help Europe resist the spread of communism



-Eastern Bloc Countries

- Stalin refuses to allow Eastern Bloc Countries to accept Marshall Plan money from the U.S.

- Yugoslavia leaves the Eastern Bloc and accepts Marshall Plan money from the US

- Brinkmanship- 1950’s- 1960’s

- United States would go on the brink of war, we will use our weapons and go to war, we will use it, back off Soviet Union

- Massive Retaliation/ Mutual Deterrence/Mutual Assured Destruction

- If one side attacks the other side and will attack back

- NATO, North Atlantic Treaty Organization

- Was a defensive alliance, was the first peacetime alliance in US History

- Still around today and has expanded

-CIA vs KGB

- Central Intelligence Agency- 1947 to Present

- Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnostit

- Committee for State Security

- 1954-1991

- Stalin dies in 1953

- He stayed up all night watching western movies, called meetings in the morning

-Nikita Khrushchev- 1953-1964

- US wasn’t sure what to expect
