(common enemy) Vietnam was split into North (communist) and South. (supported by US) Escalation: Gradually getting more and more involved in the war. Slowly becoming majorly involved in the war. Truman sent money to the French, Eisenhower sent military advisors, Kennedy sent special (small) operation forces, Johnson sent military combat forces. Viet Cong: America's enemy during the Vietnam war. Guerilla Warfare: Fighting and retreating. A good strategy for smaller countries to fight bigger countries. "A lion slashing an elephant and then running. The elephant will bleed to death." Gulf of Tonkin Resolution: North vietnamese ship torpedoes a US ship. President Lydon Jackson: Promised to stay out of the Vietnam fight. However, he was preparing for war. General William Westermoreland: Thought that more troops would win the war. Tet Offensive: Nearly every major city in South Nam was attacked. This scared people in the US. They felt that American victory was impossible and that the government had been lying to or purposely misleading them. Pentagon Papers: Top-secret historical study about the war that showed how the government was misleading the US public in all stages of the war. Operation Rolling Thunder: Code name for non-stop bombing raids in North Vietnam by the US. It was supposed to destroy the will of the North Vietnamese to fight, to destroy industrial bases and air defenses and to stop the flow of men and supplies. However, we did not succeed in destroying their will to fight. Ho Chi Minh Trail: US wanted to bomb the trial to stop the movement of goods. However, we did not succeed in slowing them down. Agent Orange: A herbicide or gas that the US would use to fight back with during herbicidal warfare. Napalm: Flammable liquid used in warfare. Firstly used on buildings, later used as personal self-defense. Sticks to skin and causes severe burns when caught to flames. My Lai Massacre: American soldiers rapped and mutilated many innocent civilians. Brought harm to many children and women in Vietnam. Vietnam War Protesters: Students and people who heard through the media that our US Soldiers were committing these horrible crimes to innocent people and were infuriated. They decided to protest. Kent St. University Protest/Massacre: College students protested about the killing and raping occurring in Vietnam and were protesting. Some decided to begin yelling "fire" and were mistaken for giving permission to fight back at the protesters. Five were killed and more ingured. Pres. Richard Nixon: "We want peace and honor." Vietnamization: Pulling out of the war peacefully. Vietnam stayed split in North and South. Paris Peace Accords- 1973: Fighting stopped. US would pull out of Vietnam. North and South Vietnam would recognize each other's independence. War Powers Act: Limits the power of the President in the US to wage war.
So many people were against the war because the US lied to the people, they distrusted the government, there was killing of innocent people in massacres, supporting bad government in the South, the power of the press, and Americans were questioning why we were even fighting in the first place.
