Korean War (The Forgotten War)
- Korea invaded by Japan
- reason was to unite country under communism
- outcome was to unite under democracy???
- After WWII Korea was split into two North (USSR) and South (US)
- election held never happened
- united nations election in 1948
- SU refused to allow participation in election in their occupied zone
- Instead they handed over power to north Korean communist party under Kim IL sung
- Syngman Rhee- Elected in the South
- Back and forth war
- US left South Korea and North Korea wanted to invade
- had to get permission from China and Russia to invade
- United Nations wanted to send troops to help South Korea
- North Korea was able to be aggressive
- Mao and Stalin didnt like the idea of the election so he put Kim in charge
- concerned that it would encourage American intervention in Asia after just leaving
- Kim was able to manipulate both of them
- North Invades and pushes South Korea all the way down to Pusan
- US was not prepared for this invasion
- General Douglass MacArthur was in charge
