Coral Sea-U.S. attacked Shoho, a carrier, and destroyed it. each side had many losses-it was first time japan lost a major offensive in war.

Saipan- bombardment began june 13 1944- crews on ships were inexperienced and had to attack from a distance due to mines- landing began two days later-japan launched counter attack- disaster for japanese navy, the lost three aircraft carriers-japanese fought to the last man-they hid in volcanic caves and were pushed out- japanese got all their men together and made a final bonzai charge- 3000 killed 10000 wounded.

Guadalcanal and surrounding islands were near supply lines- key japanese airfield on island- US took field early- japan launched several counteroffensives- eventually withdrew from island-

Iwo Jima- japanese airfields on iwo jima- US marines charged island- many many casualties- japanese were fortified in mountains then launched final bonzai attack-

Okinawa was last major offensive of war- 40 carriers and 18 battleships-1300 ships and 180000 troops- japanese troops entrenched in mountains of island-they sent their biggest warship to fight us but we sunk it- we attacked the line and they retreated
