The US homefront continued...

Economic Gains; the war years were good ones for the people inthe war; as fefense industries boomed, unemployment fell 2 a 1.2 percent in 1944; average weekly wages also rose 10 percent; farm production increased 50 percent and farm income tripled; before the war ended most people wer able to pay off their mortgages; during the war the percent of women the occupied jobs rose to 35 percent

Population shifts; the war triggered on of teh biggest migrations in history; over 1 million migrants moved to California between 1941 to 1944; towns with defense industries doubled and some even tripled; African Americans just up and left the south and headed to the North in record numbers.

Social Adjustments; wives had a hard time taking care of heir children alone; children got usedto staying with neighbors while their mothers went to work; in 1944, the congress passed the GI Bill of Rights; the bill provided education and training to the veterans who went off to war and didn't get all the education they could have gotten; About 7.8 million veterans attended colleges, that was completely paid by the government.

Tension in Los Angeles; in 1943 ther was a big zoot suit riot; the zoot suet riot was a suit the was worn by most Mexican Americans at this time; the riot had started when 11 sailors wer attackeed by some mexicans wearing zoot suits; mobs poured into mexican areas and grabbed eery zootsuit wearing persion they could find; the mobs wuld rip the zoot suits off the beat thim senseless.

Taxes; taxes rose durint eh war; everyone agreed on the need for high taxes to pay for the war; by 19444 mearly every emplyed person was paying federal income taxes; taxes were used o pay for factories.

Baby Boom; marriage and motherhood cdame back; the birth rate stared shooting up in 1941; then paused tin 1944-19445; it continued to soar until peaking in the late 1950s; government set up the EMIC; provided free prenatal and natal care; 76 million American children wer born between 1945 and 1964; laws made it hard to devorce absent servicemen; the number of divorces peaked when they returned.

The Aferican Front

The fighting started in Africa on June 10, 1940- May 16, 1943; they fougt in Libya, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco.

Hitler wanted Madagascar; to ship jews to it.
