The First Berlin Crisis-

  • Germany split into 4 zones
  • Western Germany doing well, Eastern bad
  • The West wanted the East to rejoin, Stalin feared it would hurt Soviet Security
  • Stalin decided to try to gain control of West Berlin which was deep inside the Eastern Section
  • Stalin cut road, trail, and canal links with West Berlin; starve into submission
  • West responded by airlifting the necessary supplies to allow West Berlin to survive
  • Russia admitted defeated and lifted blockade in May 1949

  • 1962
  • After Spanish/American War Cuba got independence
  • Fidel Castro took over in 1958 and got together with Soviet Union (Communist)
  • U.S. tries to overthrow Castro; Castro asks Soviet Union to bring nukes
  • First Strike Capabilities were given to Soviet Union
  • The Compromise- The Soviets were remove their missiles from Cuba
  • The U.S. would not invade Cuba
  • The U.S. would secretly remove our missiles from Turkey

Berlin Wall-

  • 1961
  • Soviet Union built a wall because they know no one will be left
  • They know no one wants their system so they build a wall to keep people in
  • forced their system down people's throats
  • People were fleeing for freedom, more job opportunities, rejoin families.
  • People from East wanted to go West-all people wanted to go WEST
  • Eastern Europe is Communist
  • Western Europe is Democratic
  • People who tried to escape got killed
  • No Man's Land was between the east and west that would stop people from fleeing
  • Checkpoints- Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie-you had to go through these specific points if you were allowed to officially pass over (for business)
  • 1989 Berlin Wall comes down-Cold War really ended
  • One day the wall was super secure, then people crowded around the wall and destroyed the wall

  • Late 1954, The Senate voted to Censure (take his power) him for his conduct and to strip him of his privileges
  • McCarthy died three years later from alcoholism
  • House UN-American Activities Committee (HUAC-1945-1975)
  • This organization went after directors and actors in Hollywood
  • The committee believed that films were spreading communist propaganda
  • They set up hearings to investigate the movie industry
  • Hollywood Ten-Ten directors/actors that McCarthy singled out saying they were communist
  • Each man was found guilty and sentenced to spend a year in prison and pay $1,000 fine
