First Berlin Crisis- June 1948-May 1949
The Division between Germany and Berlin
In 1948, the 3 western controlled zones of Germanys ( US, France, UK) were united, and grew in prosperity due to the Marshall Plan
West wanted East to rejoin, but Soviets would not let them.- East was struggling
Stalin decdied to try to gain control of West Berlin which was deep inside the Eastern Sector
Stalin cut road, rail and canal links with west Berlin to starve into submission
West reponded by airlifting in the necessary supplies to allow west Berlin to survive
May 1949, Russia admitted defeat and lifted the blockade
- Neither side wanted to start a war
