April 20 - Work on song again.
April 21- Looked at our tests. Then we practiced our song.
April 22- We discussed the Berlin Wall. When we got done, we did our song again.

First Berlin Crisis- June 1948-May 1949
The Division between Germany and Berlin
In 1948, the 3 western controlled zones of Germanys ( US, France, UK) were united, and grew in prosperity due to the Marshall Plan
West wanted East to rejoin, but Soviets would not let them.- East was struggling
Stalin decided to try to gain control of West Berlin which was deep inside the Eastern Sector
Stalin cut road, rail and canal links with west Berlin to starve into submission
West responded by airlifting in the necessary supplies to allow west Berlin to survive
May 1949, Russia admitted defeat and lifted the blockade
- Neither side wanted to start a war
April 23- Presentations.
Red Scare-
Chinese Civil War. Happened before WWII. 1928-1937. Mao Zedong and the communists win. Chiang Kai-Shek feels to Taiwan. Taiwan is who the US and the UN recognizes as China until 1972. Richard Nixon visits China in 1972- Detente.
Alien Registration Act of 1940 (Smith Act)- Made it illegal to advocate the overthrow of the US government. Required all non-citizen adult residents to register with the government. Approx. 215 people were indicted under the legislation, including alleged communists, Anarchists, and fascists. Prosecutions under the Smith Act continued until the Supreme Court decisions declared law unconstitutional.
McCarthy's downfall finally began in Oct. 1953 when he started to investigate "communist infiltration into the military."
April 24- Presentations.
Bay of Pigs- Cuban operation. Meant to overthrow Castro. Hurt Kennedy because he promised to send air cover, but he didn't do it.
The compromise- The Soviets would remove their missiles from Cuba. The US would promise never to invade Cuba. The Us would secretly remove iyr nuclear missiles from Turkey within six months.
Berlin Wall- The USSR wanted to keep the people on their side.
