First Berlin Crisis

• In 1948, the three western controlled zones of Germany (US, France, UK) were united and grew in prosperity due to Marshal plan
• West wanted the East to rejoin, but Stalin feared it would hurt soviet security
• Stalin cut road, rail and canal links with Berlin, hoping to starve into submission
• West responded by airlifting in necessary supplies to allow west Berlin to survive
• in May 1949, Russia admitted defeat and lifted the blockade 

Thursday: 

Bay of Pigs 

• A body of water in Cuba
• Cuba had become communist
  • US didn't like it
• Fidel Castro was leader of Cuba
• Cuban exiles were trained by the CIA
  • Invade and overthrow Castro
  • Asked SU to bring in nuclear weapons
• Did not give air support to Cubans

Berlin Wall - 1961:

• People start fleeing from east Germany to west Germany -> east Germany build a wall 
• if people tried to escape, they were killed 

Friday:

Red Scare: 

• Rosenberg Trial: spies how were in the US from the soviet union; they got executed 
• Iron Curtain, and domino effect were causes of the red scare 
• China became communist 
• Korean war started 
• USSR's first atomic test -> US was scared -> people build bomb shelters 
• we were concerned that China would fall into communism, because they are so big
  • Chiang Kai Shek: we supported him, because he wasn't communist
  • Mao Zedong: he was communist, he killed many people (60 mio), he wanted the people to make steel instead of food -> people starve
• Chinese civil war: 
  • Moe Zedong and the communist won 
  • Richard Nixon visits China in 1972 (Detente) - that when communist China became "normal" China (China is still communist) 
• Alien Registration Act of 1940:
  • Made it illegal to advocate (talking about) the overthrow of the US government 
  • The act which allows the government to go after many communists and out them in prison 
• McCarthy: HUAC:
  • Senator from Wisconsin
  • he was anti-communist 
  • he became pretty popular overnight 
  • He lost lots of power (1953), because he started to accuse people from the military to be communists 
  • catholic democrats supported McCarthy
  • he died because of alcohol abuse 
  • McCarthyism: Accusing people without having evidence 
• • organization went after directors and actors in Hollywood 
  • Hollywood 10: were 10 top men he were found guilty and had to spend a year in prison and pay 1,000 $ fine 

Cuba Missile Crises:

• US saw a picture from Cuba where they saw Nuclear Missiles
• Us really didn't wanted Cuba to have Nuclear weapons 
• Soviet Union would have first range on us with the missiles at Cuba
• Kennedy said: "They can not stay there" 
• Compromise:
  • We blockaded Cuba, that they don't get more
  • Military wanted to bomb and destroy them; but Kennedy didn't want to make them 'angry'
  • Soviet Union would remove them, because we promised not to invade Cuba and remove our missiles from Turkey within 6 month
