**Cold war key events- ALL OF THESE
-Bay of Pigs 1961
In Cuba- Fadell joined SU, took place there, that’s why it’s called Bay of Pigs (invasion). What is it: attempt of US to overthrow Fadell Castro. Didn’t want it to look like the US was invading Cuba so used Cubans and CIA trained them. What were the results? They all surrender and they were prisoners of war and it was a horrible outcome. How did it hurt President Kennedy? JFK wanted it to look like US had NOTHING to do with it. Huge embarrassment of Kennedy because everyone found out very soon after. We were supposed to give them air support and didn’t give it to them so kind of taking both sides. NOW- its better but now we are becoming better and closer and trading might start happening.
-Berlin Wall 1961
(E- Communist W- Democrat) Blockaded West Berlin, it was to the brink of war and we tried to stop their trade. People are trying to flee from whatever and wanted freedom and equality and wanted choices. Business were leaving to go to West Berlin. What did USSR want? Knew they would be losers if they built it but did it anyways. Anyone who tried to escape would be killed. Tried to escape underground, out of buildings, hot air balloons, thousands escaped but may were killed trying to escape and you could no longer go to the other part of the city. Area between was known as like the death strip and you would be killed if caught on it. 1989- Biggest part of wall was built in 85, Gorbachaft said the SU would no longer going to interfere with east Europe and let them do what they want. Crack in a dam- there was a small trickle towards the end of the Cold War and then he let them do what they wanted so that was the end of that.
-Red Scare
Culture revolution- making people follow more of what the government specifically wants. Chinese Civil War: WWII started and communist will, Sheik flees to Taiwan, Taiwan is who the US and the United Nations recognizes as China until 1972, Richard Nixon visits China in 1972- Détente (easing of tension) then communist China became the official china and we got kind of closer. McCarthy from Wisconsin Senator- against communism and try to get rid of it any way possible. Ruined a lot of careers, Hollywood ten were 10 major Hollywood producers during this time, eventually they were found guilty and were blacklisted and you couldn’t work barley. Charlie Chaplin was forced out of the country and blacklisted.
-Cuban Missile Crisis
We don’t allow Cuba to have nuclear missiles and this was the closest we have come the having a nuclear war with SU. but a deal was made- blockaded Cuba, SU would remove their missiles form Cuba, Us would promise never to invade Cuba, the US would secretly remove our nuclear missiles from Turkey within six months.
