Monday- US Notes 

  • Pearl Harbor
    • Very shallow area (surprising because torpedoes would hit the bottom before they would explode) 
    • Far away 
    • Japanese put wooden fins on so that they would float and explode
      • USS Arizona Memorial 
      • boat is still there
    • Got people to buy war bonds and join the military 
    • Next day, December 8, 1941, Germany Italy declares war on the US (FDR's Speech) 
  • FDR's War Message
    • Peal Harbor was not the only area Japan attacked on December 7th
    • Also attacked: Hong Kong, Guam, Philippine Island, Walk Island, Midway Island
  • Why Japan Attacked
    • Wanted to force oil trading again with the US
    • Signed a Japanese- Soviet Union pact (didn't have to worry about the Soviet so they focused on the US)
    • Japanese leader looked against Pearl Harbor because he thought it was a mistake 
  • Backdoor to War Conspiracy
    • The US wanted the Japanese to attack us
    • US could've done something to prevent the attack by not giving them any alternative but to attack 
  • Douglas MacArthur
    •  Didn't want to leave the war 
    • Famous General 
    • Forced to leave the Philippians in 1942 
    • Really full of himself and harmful 
    • Came back in 1944 
  • Baton Death March
    • US was forced to travel from one camp to another 
    • Philippine POW camps (Japanese did this to the US)
    • 650 soldiers lost 
  • Doolittle's Raid
    • April, 1942 
    • First best thing that happened for the US 
    • Dropped a few bombs in Tokyo, Japan 
    • Done to make people feel like there was still hope for the US in the war 
    • Didn't really have that much of an impact (militarily) 
  • Battle of the Coral Sea 
    • First Turning point for US in the War
    • US held the Japanese from taking over Coral Sea and later trying to take Australia 
    • Actually tied but Japanese didn't win so we thought it was successful 
  • Battle of Midway
    • June 1942
    • Islands were important to stop and refuel 
    • US had broken Japanese code 
  • US Strategy of Island Hopping
    • Instead of hitting every island, we skipped a few islands and bomb others
    • Save bombs for certain islands
    • Caused Japanese to protect certain islands that were never going to be attacked 
  • Kamikazes
    • Pact airplanes for of things and crash into ships
    • Japanese destroyed many planes father then they could replace 
    • Had to shoot the plane down before it attacked the ship 
  • Summer of 1945- Invasion
    • Operation Downfall 
    • Planned for October, 1945 
    • Estimated 1 million casualties 
    • about 267,000 deaths (Just US deaths) 

Tuesday- US Notes

  • Manhattan Project 
    • Enola Gay- Maiden name of the pilots mother
      • Paul Tibbit 
    • Didn't destroy the whole city (Like wouldn't destroy all of Omaha 
    • Japan still didn't surrender after Hiroshima bomb 
      • Everything went right except for the picture plane getting lost 
  • Nagasaki Bomb
    • "Fat Man"- went into a bomb and then exploded 
    • Bockscar- plane that dropped it 
      • Everything went wrong because of cloud cover 
    • Had to drop Nagasaki because the bomb was heavy and were going to run out of fuel so they just dropped it where they could 
    • Japan later surrendered 
  • VJ Day
    • August 14/15,(Official UK)
    • September 2, 1945 (Official US)
      • When Japan officially signed on USS Missouri 
  • Postdam Conference- July,1945
    • Dismantle the current government of Japan 
    • The Allies will occupy Japan 
    • Japan will consist only of the major islands
    • Dismantle their military

    • Establishment of the United Nations
    • Germany to be divided into four zones
    • Free elections allowed in the states of eastern Europe
    • USSR promised to join the war against Japan 
      • Stalin, Churchill, and Roosevelt to plan what would happen when the war ended
  • FDR Dies
    • Truman swan in April 12, 1945

    • Victory in Europe Day

    • Encourage people to grow food from their victory garden
