Key Terms

Iron Curtain Speech- A separation of Communism and democracy, the countries that were communism were separated from the democratic country,

Domino Theory- Communist victory in one country would lead to a chain reaction, Russia is the starting domino,

Policy of Containment- US policy created to stop the spread of communism,

Truman Doctrine- America helping any country that threatened by communism; mainly Greece and Turkey, 

Marshall Plan- US paying to help Europe economy after WW2,

Massive Retaliation- Strategy of military counter attack that involves the use of nuclear weapons,

-Mutual Deterrence- Detours both sides from using nuclear weapons because both sides would be destroyed,

-Mutual Assured Destruction- All will be destroyed if nuclear warfare is started,

NATO- North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Organization of 12 countries of the Atlantic Pact, Alliance with European countries and US, UK, France, West Germany, Italy, Portugal, Norway,

Warsaw Pact-A military treaty and association of European Countries formed in 1955. Organized in answer to NATO. counties included, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary. 

CIA-Central Intelligence Agency-An agency that investigates and gathers security information through human intelligence, Spies(1947).  

KGB-(1954)-The former Soviet Union FBI/CIA. 

Peaceful Coexistence-Living together in peace rather than in constant hostility. (1953)

De-Stalinization-Disregarding or ignoring the influence image and leadership of Joseph Stalin from WWII. 

Detente-The easement of tension between two sides in either a negotiation or agreement. (1970's)

Perestroika-Restructuring of the Soviet Communist Government during the 1980's. Allowed more democracy and free elections. 

Glasnost-Russian for publicity-(1980's) A policy for opening and discussion of economic and political realities. Issued in Russia by Mikhail Gorbachev. 

Nuclear Powers of the World-U.S, Russia, United Kingdom, France, China.

Nuclear Non proliferation treaty- Was used to try and prevent the wide spread of nuclear weapons but it could still be used for energy,

Salt I- Strategic Arms Limitations talks 1972- intended to restrain the arms rave in strategic and ballistic missiles with nuclear weapons,

Atomic Test Ban- Treaty to ban Nuclear testing,

Anti Ballistic missile treaty 1972- US and USSR signed the ABM treaty as part of an effort to control their arms race in nuclear weapons,

ICBMS- Type of anti ballistic missile defense system,

 

SORT- 2003, Offenseive reductions treaty, between US and Russia, stockpile of both deployed and reserve nuclear weapons was to be cut in half,

New START- Signed by Presdient Obama, number of strategic of strategic nuclear missiles launchers will be reduced by half, lasts until 2021,

UN- Established world peace, can wage war, Security council, Ge
