In 1133 the Bartholomew fair started in England. A fair is a parent to the present day amusement park. County and state fairs also helped create amesment parks.The fairs were an annual celebration of a ood harvest and would last one to two weeks. In the final decade of the 19th century trolley cars were developed in most large american cities. Trolley car companies were responsible for the making of trolley parks. Before street car companies bought land for parks there was only picnic parks. By 1919 the were between 1500 and 2000 amusment parks in the United States.Some parks were found by resort locations, others were found by rivers and ponds that provided bathing and water sports. A famous location is Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY. Hotels and amusments were built to accomedate to upper and working class americans. This park is the first park to charge admission and sell tickets within the park. The first carousel was installed in the 1870s. The first roller coaster, the Switchback Railway was installed in 1884. It wasn't till 1895 that the first permanent amusement park in the United States opened Sea Lion Park at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. In 1897 it was joined by Steeplechase Park, the first of three major amusement parks that would open in the area. George Tilyou designed the park to provide thrills and sweep away the restraints of the victorian crowd. There were also other parks that were on Coney island Luna Park, opened in 1903, and Dreamland, opened in 1904. Coney Island was a huge success and by year 1910 attendance on a Sunday could reach a million people. Fire was a constant threat back in the day due to most of the constuction being wood. many of the fires would start due to arson.
