Today we got another free day to work on our projects. I focused on the section in my book about the growth of high schools. As i said in my last blog yesterday very, very frew students went on to attend high school. But, the new industrial age demanded students to go on to high school and learn more. In the early 1900's more than half a million students went on the high school. High schools courses mainly focused on science, civics, and socail studies. They also had vocational courses to prepare males for jobs such as mechanics and carpentry and females for office work.African Americans were not accepted. Less than 1 percent attended public high schools. Most if they went on to high school went to private schools. Around 1910 3 percent of African American students ages 15 to 19 attended high schools. Most of these students went to public schools and still very few went to public schools.
