Engineering in the late 1800's skyrocked. They were able to build cities bigger to cover the over population crises. In 1870 25 cities had a population of 50,000 or more.Architects were able to design taller buildings because of two factors: the invention of elevators and the development of steel skeletons to bear the weight of buildings. The invention of steel cable bridges brought cities closer together. New developments in communication brought the nationcloser together.By 1890, the literacy rate in the United States had risen to nearly 90 percent. Publishers had to put out double the amount of newspapers and books to keep up. In the early 20th century brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright invented the air plane. Their first successful flight on December 17, 1903. It covered 120 feet in 12 seconds.
