Finally, Friday! Today in class we began taking tests and working on our Chapter 5 through 8 assigned blogs. My topic is Chapter 5, section 2. I began reading my section using the E-Edition of the U.S History Book. The Homestead Act was passed by Congress in 1862. It offered 160 acres of free land to any citizen who was the head of a household. From the year 1862 to 1900, up to 600,000 families took advantage of the government’s offer. Only about 10 percent of the land that was intended for use by families, was actually settled by families. Thousands of settlers were exodusters, which are African Americansvwho moved from the post-Reconstruction South to Kansas.
