Today in class we were supposed to work on our projects. The internet didn't work during the whole class period and it was extremely annoying. So all i did today was read my chapter and try to get the internet to work. My chapter is about Expanding Public Education. I learned a lot about how schools were started and how they seperated Caucasions, Immigrants, and African Americans.William Torrey Harris was the person who basically started schools. He believed that public schools were more for the students than the teachers and he saw it as a great instrument. Many public schools were established by the Civil War. Even thought schools were available many many children recieved no education. Very few children went to high school. As the years went on kindergarten was apart of the public schools and then even high schools were popular.Racial discrimination was a major issue when it came to public schools. African Americans were excluded from public schools. Some of them went to private schools. Immigrants were encouraged to go to schools so they could be "Americanized." This is what i learned today by reading my book.
