We have to do todays blogs on what section and chapter we are studying. My chapter is chapter eight section one, Science and Urban life. A main technology is the building of the Brooklyn bridge. The bridge was opened in 1833, after 14 years of building it. Before the bridge was build laborers would have to go to work in a caisson. A caisson is a water tight chamber that took workers deep beneath the East River. In 1870 25 American cities had a population of 50,000 or more, and by 1890 58 cities had 50,000 or more. By the twentieth century 4 out of ten americans made their homes in cities due to an increasing number of jobs.City planners planned to restore a part of serenty to the enviroment by designing recreational areas. Fredrick Law Olmsted, a landscape designer started a movement for planning urban parks.By 1890 the literacy rate went up to nearly 90 percent. Publishers turned out increasing numbers of books, magazines, and newspapers. A series of technological advantages led to the aid of these accomplishes. American mills made cheap paper out of wood pulp. The new paper could withstand high speed presses.
