5th - 7th grade review continued

Compromise of 1850 - The Utah and New Mexico territories were open to popular soverignity, allowing people for the South to change these states to switch to slave states. Another thing that pleased the South was the ability to go North and find their slave or take a new one. The North also enjoyed the abolition of slavery in Washington D.C.

Dred Scott Decision (1857) - Formor slave that got his freedom, his master tried to take him back and Scott sued his master. 7-2 decision by the Supreme Court against Scott, due to a black man not being a citizen of the United States, and suddenly slavery could be everywhere. When Abraham Lincoln came to office southern states started to sesede in fear that he would get rid of slavery. Missourt, Kentucky and West Virginia had slaves but stayed loyal to the US Government. The South had an advantage for awhile with better generals, more skill, and a better cuase to fight for for them. However, the North had more population, factories, and railroads which helped them win the war.

Reconstruction (1865-1877) - The period of time (12 years) where South had to be rebuilt and reorganized. They had to find out what to do with the ex slaves, families, as well as finding more economic opprotinity for the now slaveless South. After Lincoln died Johnson took over and congress impeached him due to him being a southern supporter, but he stayed and was hated.

Republican Radiacal Recontruction - Rebuilt south economically, socially, politically and physically. Spit south into 5 military districts by the US Army. 13th amendment: Made slavery illegal, 14th - It gave citizenship to dormor slaves, the states can't take away rights, 15th - It allowed all men to vote, no matter their skin color. Freedman's Bureau set up to help for freed slaves, ood clothing, education and job training. Carpetbaggers were Northern born Republicans who moved south to help slaves and civilize/industrialize the South. Scalawags were Southerners that were Republicans, joined up with the carpetbaggers. African Americans never really got the rights we see today until 1964.
