Mexico allowed Americans to come and immigrate into Mexico but there had to be rules. Americans ignored the rules and Mexico tried to stop them, but war broke out and Texas won. Texas was an independent country for about a decade before we annexed it and brought Texas into the U.S.. The Border, according the the U.S. was the Rio Grande river, but to Mexico, the border was at the Newses River. The president sent troops to the Rio Grande to send a message to Mexico and Mexico fought to kick them out. (This way it looks like the Mexicans fought first). America won and took over the land up until the Rio Grande then bought the Mexican Cession.
Reasons for the Civil war- Sectionalism (South and North were very different in culture), Slavery, States’ rights, Tariffs, Election of 1860 & Secession.

We got the Oregon Territory from a treaty from Britain. New states always lead to issues because it always swayed who had more power in congress between the North and South. Supreme court says blacks are not citizens so they could not sue in court, so that meant the government could not abolish slavery and suddenly, slavery could be open anywhere. This upset abolitionists but made the south very happy. When the Civil War rolled about, states such as florida, North + South Carolina, Texas, Kentucky, etc. all seceded. During the Civil War, the North had more resources than the South. There was a larger population, an emergence of new military leaders, the determination to end slavery. Reconstruction - 1865 - 1877 - was after the war when the South had to be rebuilt and reorganize and brought back into the Union. Lincoln and Johnson wanted to be easy on the South after the war. Lincoln chose Johnson because he was a Democrat and Lincoln could use him to try and get the rest of the Democrats to follow.

After the Civil War, the 13, 14, and 15 Amendments were created, stating that all men could vote despite their color, slavery was illegal, and anyone could become a citizen of the US despite their skin color. Freedmen’s Bureau was set up to help former slaves. Carpetbagger- Northern born white Republicans who moved South after the war. Many Carpetbaggers won political office or became rich businessmen. Reason they were called carpetbaggers- carried bags that looked like carpet when moving South. Scalawags- Southern born white republicans. Jim Crow was a guy that painted himself black and acted dumb to try and send the message that African Americans were stupid. He also made segregation laws and was extremely racist. The South hated reconstruction and in 1877, President Hayes won the election and got rid of it.
