Tuesday-Notes

ATHENS

Women's Role- Just stayed at home and watched the kids. The women did all the dirty work. Had to look nice and make food for their husbands.

 

Entertainment- Make Pottery, Participate in outdoor themes, Listen to music, Follow politics, Participate in athletics, Play small games

 

Trade- Our economy is primarily based off our trade

 

Coinage- To make trade easier, Athens has recently developed a coin for us to use for trading purposes.

 

Taxation- Direct taxes aren’t commonly placed upon us average civilians.

 

Architecture- is involving very tall columns that represent detail, symmetry

 

Parthenon- This building is a temple that is dedicated to Athena 

 

Military- Athens were known for their Navy

 

Government- We are a democracy

 

Laws- Only citizens born in Athens could be part of government.

 

Important Figures- 

Aristotle- Father of Western Philosophy

Herodotus- Father of History

Alexander the Great-Paved the way to establish democracy

 

Wednesday-

SPARTA

 

Men's Role- Men devote lives to military service.

 

Women's Role- Receive formal education, Participate in athletic competitions. Didn’t have to cook, clean or make clothes.

 

Infants-The infants that weren’t up to standard were left to die.

 

Kids- 

Boys-We were expected to be fighters

Girls- Allowed to remain with the parents. Forced to practice-gymnastics,ravelin and dance

 

Upper Class- We are full citizens of Sparta

 

Middle Class-We were free men and citizens of state

 

Lower Class- Mixing with the upper class was not allowed.

 

Government- Combination of -Oligarchy, monarchy and democracy

 

Economy- We depend mainly on conquering other people and farms. Sparta is located at the sea,which allowed us to do a lot of trade. Citizens can buy and sell things at the agora.

 

Architecture- Represents our lives- We value skills, knowledge and preservation.

 

Military-  U were started training at 7. Women were not allowed.


Entertainment- They loved to dance and play athletics

 

Thursday-Notes

 

Metic’s Life- A male of female that was from a different city-state.

 

The Assembly- A minimum of 6000 male citizens were in the assembly.

 

Education in Athens- Studied reading,grammar,poetry,history,music,math,logic and public speaking. Only sons of wealthy families. Girls were educated by their mothers in the home to do cleaning and cooking.

 

Persian Wars-  Fought between the Perisan Empire and Greek City-states. Problems started when Perisan leader Cyrus the Great took over Ionia in 546 BCE. They were knocking in Greece door.

 

Ionian revolt- Ionian asked Athens to help them which they did.Darius the great quickly ended the Ionian revolt but was very angry at the greeks for agreeing to help the ionians.

 

Militades Escapes-Militades escaped to Athens and told the Athenians that the persians were coming to burn Athens

 

Persian Envoy- Darius sent an envoy to the greek city-states in 491 BCE asking then to submit to the persians. 

 

Friday-Notes

 

Persia was the largest empire in the world at the time and consisted of millions of people. Ancient Greece was about 500,000 total people. 

 

Athens & Sparta had been enemies for hundreds of years. They now fought not for athens or for sparta but for greece.

 

Battle of Marathon- 90000 persians. 10000-20000 greeks. Greece won

 

How did greeks win? Longer spears, heavier swords,better armor and the phalanx formation

 

Pheidippides- After the battle ended, he ran from Marathon to Athens to tell the Athenians of the victory over persia.
