  • Allowed the US Government to supervise railroads
  • Required railroad rates to be “fair and just”
  • Set up interstate Commerce Commission to carry out law
  • Failed to help farmers at first

Populist Movement – Omaha platform – 1890’s

  • Help famers out of debt
    • Farmers made up the populist party - help common people out (PEOPLE PARTY)
    • Farmers doing good – make more food for the country
  • Give people a greater voice in government
    • White, Rich, Males had all voice in government - Tried passing laws to help give them more power
  • Increase money supply in circulation-Silverite’s
    • Tough for farmers to repay debt when more circulation. Farmers wanted inflation, so their crop prices would go up and easier to repay debt

William Jennings Bryan – cross of gold --- speech in that era the promoted the gold standard

  • Single terms for president/vice president
  • Secret ballot
  • 8-hour work day
  • Restrictions on immigration

  • The more money you make the higher present you pay.

  • Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst are Iowa senators
  • Directly selected by people within the state

Single terms for President/Vice President – Why?

  • Didn’t want one ruler, like a king.
  • People didn’t want one ruler for a long time
  • Got 2 terms after world war 1

Secret Ballot- Why?

  • So no one can influence or intimidate you while voting

8 hour works days- Why?

  • To make more product to make more income and money

Restrictions on immigrations (legal) – Why?

  • 1870 -1920
  • Millions of people came from all around the world
  • Factory workers wanted to limit how many could come in because the immigrants can take their work
  • Coming from south-eastern Europe
