Wednesday- Chapter 5.3: Democracy and Greece's Golden Age-
Direct democracy- is a form of democracy which the people was the say and rule directly
Classic art- the are of ancient Greece and Rome, in which harmony, order, and proportion were emphasized
Tragedy- a type of theater in which a play with a guy (king or Ruler) with good qualities and strong nature is forced with a hardship and falls from something bad happening.
Comedy- Ancient Greek comedy was split into 3 types: old comedy, normal comedy, new comedy. They were all jokes.
Peloponnesian War- ancient Greek war fought by the delian league (Athens) against the pelopannesian league (city of Athens, and Sparta)
Socrates- Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy.
Plato- he found a school in Athens in and started a school called the Academy, he had a philosophy that he believed that good existed in a realm beyond material earth
Aristotle- Philosopher that related logic, mathematics, biology, Ag, medicine, and dance
The golden Age of Athens: 477- 431 BC, Came about after Greece defeated the Persians. Drama, sculpture, poetry, philosophy, architecture, and science flourished. Know as the "Age of Pericles". Pericles- was the leader of Athens at this time, he led the Athens in the Peloponnesian War. He was a skillful politician, inspiring speaker, and respected general. Pericles plan for Athens- three goals; strengthen Athenian democracy, hold and strengthen the empire, glorify Athens. Goal #1- stronger democracy: he increased the # of paid gov. jobs which benefited people who were not wealthy, instituted direct democracy,
Thursday- goal #2: Strengthen the empire. Helped establish and eventually led the Delian League after the Persian War. Alliance of Greek City-States to protect themselves form further attacks from the Persians. Grew Athens Navy which would help Athens strengthen the safety of its empire. Started dominating other city-states which led to conflicts, especially with Sparta. Goal #3- Glorify Athens: used money from the Delian League to buy gold, marble, and ivory to make Athens a beautiful City. Used money from the Delian League to hire artists, architects, and workers to build buildings and sculptures. Phidias was hired to build the Parthenon, Greek sculptors focused on beauty, not realism (what something would actually look like), Classical Art focused on simplicity and being well proportioned. Phidias' Parthenon- a master piece of architectural design and craftsmanship (built for goddess Athena). Inside the Parthenon there was a statue of Goddess Athena, it is made of gold and ivory and stood 30 feet tall (goddess of wisdom and protector of Athens). Also a statue of Zeus at Olympia-Phidias (Zeus was a ruler of gods, Athena's father). Greek Drama- Tragedy and Comedy: tragedy- was a serious drama about common themes such as love, hate, war, or betrayal. The hero usually was an important person and often gifted with extraordinary abilities, a tragic flaw usually caused the hero's down fall, usually excessive pride. Sophocles wrote Oedipus the King (famous tragedy) he had issues with his family and his mother specifically and he ends up marrying his mother? Comedy- contained scenes filled with humor. playwrights often made fun of politics and respected people and ideas of the time, Aristophanes was a famous writer of comedies. The fact that Athenians could listen to criticism of themselves showed the freedom that existed in democratic Athens. Video. The start of the Greatest Subject in Recorded History- History, Herodotus pioneered the accurate reporting of events, Thucydides believed that certain types of events and political situations recur over time: Studying those events and situations would aid in understanding the present, the approaches Thucydides used in his work still guide historians today. Peloponnesian War- 431 to 404 BC: fought between Athens and Sparta, Came about as a result of Sparta not liking Athens growth of wealth and power in the area, Athens was acting like a bully, Sparta had a better army and Athens had a better Navy, with the help of a plague that hit Athens (Sparta eventually won).
