- Lonely, Bad weather, grashopper plaugues, blizzards in winter time, hit farms hard in 1870's, became excint in 1902

What challenges did settlers and farmers face on the great plains?

Rocky Mountain Plague

In 1875 the species formed the largest recorded locust swarm, 1800 miles long and 110 miles wild

Hopperdozers, horses have metal sheets to kill the bugs and stick to them.

Extinct in 1902, buffalo died out maybe relient on buffalo, so they died out also, maybe native americans did something

Small farms, not to much cattle,

Native American attacks, there were attacks on settlers throughout the mid late 1800's in many parts of america

Attacks were common, but they were also sporadic and usually involved a fairly low number od deaths

Lack of trees- sod houses built of mud, cool in summer time

Dugouts- dug into a hill, didn't have trees

Railroad prices and debts

Railroads changed farmers high prices due to lack of competiton

Many farmers mortgaged their farms to buy more seed and supplies

Crop prices fell due to overproduction

Farmers wanted more money in circulation- caused inflation which would be good for crop prices

Production of crops skyrocketed over the years, prices dropped decent amount making to much

The National Grange of the order of Patrons of Husbandry

Help farmers socially, had a lonely life, organized music and get togethers, so farmers can talk and have fun

Economically, how do you help farmers out of debt
