Thursday- The culture of the great plains indians

  • They traded buffalo hides and meat for other goods. 
  • Young men were trained as warriors and hunters. 
  • They had a tribe council not just one leader. 

Settlers moved west 

  • They thought natives didn't have the right to have land becuase they didn't think they were taking care of it good enough. 

Sand creek massacre

  • 9/29/1864 700 men attacked the village of Cheyenne and arapaho. 
  • It was an unproved attack 
  • Took place during the civil war. 

George A. Custer

  •  Battle at little bighorn
  • June 25,1876 
  • 1,000 Indians 600 whites. 

Sitting bull 

  • He was a tribal chief during the american indian war.

Friday 

Cattle Becomes big business 

  • Heards of buffalo started to disappear.
  • Horses and cattle came into the lands in wild herds.  

Chicago union stock yards

  • Opened in 1865 
  • in the 1880's they herded over 10 million cattle. 

Ranchers hired cowboys to herd cattle from Texas to Kansas. 

In 1866 there were 55,000 cowboys 

  • All they owned was the saddle 
  • They worked 10-14 hour days. 

the end of the open range 

  • Overgrazing 
  • People put up fences to mark property lines. 
  • Cattle operations went bankrupt. 

Rail roads 

  • 1850-1871, land grants to railroads for 17 million acres. 
  • Srage coach railroad travel : $1,000 and 5 and 6 months 
  • Train travel : $ 150 for 5 days.
