United Nations - The league of nations begun it (it did a bad job at keeping the peace - Didn’t have military to act on things they wanted) - worldwide peace keeping organization - After WWII the united nations was created - Works to maintain friendly relationships - works to promote economic development - deal with humanitarian efforts to get rid of aids and landmines in other countries - Help to get food to starving countries
Almost all countries are involved in the UN - 193 countries only 2 not in it - (195 countries)
General Assembly - Security Council (can start war) - Economic and Social Council - Trusteeship Council - International Court of Justice - The Secretariat (Pred. of UN)
UNICEF - donates to mothers around the world with children - Mainly tries to help people that are less fortunate and that can’t help themselves
UN Security Council - 15 countries - 5 permanent country's (most powerful countries - China, France, Great Britain, Russia, and U.S.) - 10 nonpermanent - 2 from Asia 3 from Africa 2 from Latin America and the Caribbean, 1 Eastern Europe, 2 Western Europe - Strong arm of UN and maintains international peace - Use economic sanctions - Not importing or exporting - use military forces if 15 members all 193 have to abide by it - The UN can go to other countries and be peacekeepers with solides - one person of the big 5 can veto and it won’t happen - always low on funds because of all the good work that they do all around the world
Couple months ago there was a travel ban that was considered to be a muslim ban because of terrorist - Trump says we need a better screening system so we don’t have any more terrorists - A lot of controversy about the travel ban - for 6 months - North Korea had sanctions put on them on monday 9/11/17 and then threatened to sink Japan and turn the U.S. into ashes and darkness. - Sanctions only work if all countries participate
