Working on the railroad: Mainly chinese and irish,Jodah united the Union Pacific railroad company. Political barriers made ideas for this railroad harder to imagine. Northerners began construction, but were met with problems. Buffalo would not cross the track which upset the natural ecosystem and the Indians. Golden spike marked the end of the Transcontinental railroad. Other countries began to copy the idea. Hunting buffalo, deer, beaver. In 1800: 15 million buffalo 1870: 1,000 in 2,000- 260,000
Buffalo: Used for clothing, pillows, rope, food, soap, religious rituals, cutlery, fuel, glue, tools, harness, belts, rope, ties, string, shields, bags, sewing thread, bow string, runners on sleds, decorations, fly swatters
Mountain Man: Explorers, trappers, hunters that live in wilderness. Very common in the Rocky Mountains. Employed by fir companies
U.S. Military: Custer's last stand; whole company died, Wounded Knee-Killed all men women and children
Cattle Ranching+Cowboys: Peaked between 1867-1880, Open range: area where cattle would roam free, Railhead Towns-towns at the end of the railroads, Ranchers-people who owned ranches and cattle. Texas longhorns- cross breed of cattle, Long drive- herding + moving cattle, Cattle Barons- Bigger Ranchers
25% of cowboys were ex slaves, Cowboys lived lonely and dangerous lives, Cattle industry fell when the price of beef fell
Long drive: 1,000 miles. Took 3 months to transport cattle. Cowboys spent money on drinking and gambling, prostitution, Lots of gunfights
Wyatt Earp- Sheriff, not afraid to use blunt force
Omaha Stockyards: Farmers would bring cows to stockyards, where they would be loaded on a train.
Kansas City Stockyards: Exchange building, where money was exchanged for cows, still stands.
Why were long drives necessary? Had to get cows to the railroad, for money. Why did long drives come to an end. More railroads were made, barbed wire, not as much pasture, fields got in the way
Sold for 35$ a head, but bought for 1$. Average crew was 11 men
