Manifest Destiny - Americans have the God given right to move West. Involved war with Mexico and taking a third of their land. We also bought land from France, Britain, and made the natives move west and kill them. The Great American desert was a nickname on early maps of the Great Plains in the United States and was bypassed mostly to go to California.

People moved West to sheepherd, cattle herd, and to farm. The farmers were given 160 acres of free land by the US government. The farmers were able to buy items off the catalog and able to entertain themselves. Miners moved West as well to find all the untapped silver and gold, most didn't find anything but those who did made bank. Workers were hired to build the railroads which were responsible for settling the west, many Chineese immigrants came for this work. People also came West to hunt and trap for furs. 15 million buffalo existed in 1800 but only 1000 remained in 1870, today there are 500,000. Native Americans used all of the animal while Americans from the East probably only used the hides. People also just moved West to live in the Rocky Mountains as mountain men. The military moved West to fight Native Americans, after 1890 Native Americans surrendered, called the "Plains War".

1867 to 1880 was a very romanticized period of time. This was the time of the open range and cowboys. This was a lonely and hard period of time where anything could happen, gunfights were not nearly as honest as they are in movies. Cattle were hard to handle and could cause a stamped in months of moving the cattle. 25% of the cowboys were formor slaves. They had to drive cattle up North from Texas so they could go to "Cow Towns" and sell their cows. Dodge City was the most famous cow town. A lot of money was spent on day one with drinking, gambling, fights, prostitution, and gunfights. Some people tried to keep the peace by  taking things into their own hands, vigilanties.

14th - Started watching entrepreneur video.
