- Manifest destiny - the belief that Americans had a god-given right to take over the west

- Describe the importance of the buffalo to Native Americans and how the buffalo were destroyed
- How did the US deal with Native Americans in the mid to late 1800s? What were their policies
- Why did settlers move to the Great Plains/West?
- A lot of people bypassed the Great Plains because of the lack of structure(called the great “desert of America”)
- As you go further west there is less and less rain
- Some of the biggest resources to make money were sheep herding, cattle ranching, farming
- The Homestead Act gave 160 acres of land to anyone who was willing to go out West and farm
- Thousands of people took advantage of the Homestead Act
- A lot of rich people saw this and instead of planting fields, they just sat on it so the prices would go up and they could sell the land later
- Gold and silver mining was a very popular way of earning money
- There were a lot of people who came who worked on the Railroad
- There were hunters and trappers that came west as well as adventurers
- Mountain men came to the west and adventured, living in the Mountains and off of the land
- Another reason people came to the West was the be in the Military and fight Native Americans in the Plains Wars
Cattle Ranching and Cowboys
- During the open range time there were very few fences and cattle roamed free
- Ranchers had to drive cattle long distances
- Eventually post civil war railroads were built and there was no more need to drive cattle
- Peaked between 1867-1880
- Very romanticized period of time in US history
- Life was lonely and dangerous
- Why was life dangerous? There were Native American attacks, there weren’t many other people, snakes and wild animals could harm you, sometimes stampedes were caused which resulted in cows dying which lost the cowboys money
- 25% were former slaves
- Longhorn steer was the most common type of cow driven
- Cowtowns were the destinations of cattle drivers where cattle would be sold
- Cowtowns would have several different types of stores
- When they were in Cowtowns:
- Lots of money to be spent
- Drinking
- Gambling
- Fights
- Prostitution
- Gunfights/Duels (quick and unorganized, no one is standing around watching)
- Took the law into their own hands
- Importance of Buffalo to Native- Americans
- 1800 - 15 million buffalo
- 1870 - 1,000
- 2000 - 260,000
- Today - 500,000
