Manifest Destiny is the spirit of nothing is going to stop America from expanding westward. Settlers and people moved to the Great plains / west because of the general idea that we had the right to do so and had the spirit to move west because it is what god apparently wanted us to do. Farming pushed people west alond with sheep herding and ranching. The Homestead act offered free land as long as people built a home and created crops / farm land on the property. People also moved west for the gold and silver mining. People came out for work, or more specifically, the railroad. Hunting and trapping brought hunters. Mountain men would leave and live off the land maybe to run from the law, for adventure, etc. People moved west to fight native americans.

Cattle Ranching and Cowboys- They peaked between 1867-1880. It is thought back on as something very cool, but in reality they werent all they lived up to. It was lonely and dangerous because of stampedes from cattle and Native Americans. Cattle needed to be driven North because there were no railrounds in the South to transport the animals. (takes about 2-3 months) Dodge City, Kansas is where most cattle was taken and sold. After young men sold their cattle, they had a lot of money and would use the money for drinking, gambling, prostituition, and things would come from this like gun fights, duels, fighting in general, etc. People often took the law into their own hands.
