Ch. 5.2:

-How did railroads and the Homestead Act help settle the Great Plains?

  • Act that the government made to try to get people to move west. They got 160 acres per head. The govt. also made nat. parks

  • In 1889, 2 mil. Acres were settled. The govt. declared that everything was settled in 1890. People who got the benefits of the homestead act.
  • It was successful, but it hurt Bison until nat parks were made.
  • People were getting cheap land from the act and selling it.


-What challenges did settlers face on the Great Plains?

  • it was hard

  • Dugouts and soddies were those dug out houses like on Little House on the Prairie.
    • They had bugs and snakes because of how they were built.
  • Women worked.
    • They did farming and doctoring because they were needed


-What problems did farmers face on the Great Plains?

  • Machinery was too expensive
  • Farmers were in debt
  • Bonanza farms were MASSIVE, but in 1890 a drought hit and made them go bankrupt
    • They only used one type of crop

-What was Social Darwinism and how did it apply to business?

-Explain how companies formed monopolies(vertical/horizontal integration, trusts).

-How did the government try to regulate business?

-What are labor unions and what is their purpose?

  • Lower work hours
  • People had strikes and hurt businesses because they were trying to get their rights.
  • An average of 675 died per week because of accidents on the job.
  • 20% of boys and 10% of girls were under 15.
  • Owners preferred kid workers because they wouldn't complain or join unions and they could be paid less.


Were labor unions successful in achieving their goals? Explain/Give examples.


Ch. 7.1:

Why did immigrants come to the US?

  • To escape famine, get more land, gain religious freedom.
    • People who were coming here then going back were called "birds of passage"

Where did immigrants come from?

  • People from all over came here.
  • The first was West and North Europe then the rest started coming in 1890.
  • A lot of Chinese people came here in 1898 when we annexed Hawaii
    • We tried to keep them out after a while.
  • In 1902 the National Reclamation Act helped create new farmland.
  • In 1907 one million people moved here.
  • In 1920 more that 200,000 Japanese lived on the west coast.
  • Over the next 20 years 7% of Mexico's pop. came here.
  • Germans came here because the Midwest was like Germany
  • WASP
    • White Anglo-Saxons Protestant

What problems/issues did immigrants face on the trip over and once they got here?

  • Long trip with unhealthy living conditions.
  • People in the US hated immigrants when they arrived.
  • Ellis Island in New Jersey took in 12 mil immigrants in 62 years.
    • It's an immigration museum now.
  • Immigrants were examined to make sure they were healthy and not wanted.
  • Angel Island
    • The Page Act banned citizenship for Chinese people.
    • The exclusion act flat out banned them.


Why did some people want to put restriction on immigration? What were those restrictions?

What did some people do to try to help the bad situation in the cities?
