Today in Mr. Bruns US history class 8th hour we learned.Mexican American war-About the mexican american war, Mexico and US fought in the war, and the US won. We got the region of the south west United States, like Arizona. This war carved out a huge portion of the United States. The mexicans weren't to happy about losing half of their land, led to bad blood.This war was fought purely over the principle of Manifest Destiny, to expand the lands of the US. The US envasion into Mexican lands was not justified. Texas caused bad blood with mexico, because at the time we hadn''t owned it.Pope moved forces down into the Rio Grande, and the Mexicans took it as an evasion. Mexicans retaliated by moving forces across the Rio Grande. Then the Mexicans attacked the US, and the war was on then overall we gained the land.In the war we took 50% of Mexico's land.Most of the deaths was from malnutrition, the Mexicans lost twice as many men as we did.Lincoln's Presidency-Lincoln was the 16th president, he tried to end slavery, and created the emanicpation proclamation, which freed all slaves in the southern states.The Emanicpation Proclamation in esscense actually freed no slaves, but set the goal to free slaves.Gettysburg Address: Basically a funeral speech about the soldiers whom fought in the Civil War and they will be honored.He died right after the civil war and didn't get to see reconstruction.South was concerned about Lincoln getting presidency, and they suceeded because they were in fear of Lincoln getting presidency.The South was concerned about Lincoln getting presidency because they thought Slavery would be taken away.Civil War 1861-1865The United States beat the Conferderates, the United states won mostly because they had more resources, better healthcare ECT. The South had better generals Jefferson Davis was the confederates president. The South killed more Northerners, then Northerners killed Southerners.Reconstruction 1865-1877Rebuilding of the South after the Civil War. Physical, Social, Political rebuilding.13th Amendment- Passed under the Lincoln Presidency ment to abolish slavery14th Amendment- Made men equal?15th Amendment- Gave minorities right to vote.Times were much better for African American men, after reconstruction, South went back to racisim.Wasn't till the 1960s Africans were given the rights that whites had.The South had to have everything rebuilt, railroads ect.Freedmans Bureau- Ment to help eduacate and job train African Americans.Black people mostly only knew how to farm.Republican and Democrates were opposite back then.South was split into 12 military districts. Northerners took over government, South hated the Northerners, Northerners were pretty corupt. Northerners left under the new presidency.
