Today we learned about Jefferson's Presidency, Jackson's Presidency, the land the U.S. aquired, and a little bit about the Mexican American war. Jefferson had a big part in the Lewis and Clark expedition. They wanted to make friends with the Native Americans because they didn't want to start war and they wanted to trade. While Jefferson was president he wanted to cut down taxes and he wanted a little military. Jackson was a different president. He was brought up dirt poor, while all the other presidents were wealthy. Jackson got rid of the national bank. He also wanted to get rid of the electoral college, which didn't happen. He brought down the national debt to 30,000 dollars. He was mainly blamed for the Trail of Tears. He sided with Georgia and went against the supreme court about if the Native Americans should get any land. In 1783 representatives from the U.S. and Britain signed a treaty and we got land. The Louisiana Purchase we bought Louisiana and surronding territory from the French. Supposedly some Mexicans killed some Americans in what is now Texas but, then was undecided land. We thought it was our land and the Mexicans thought it was their land. That's what started the war.
