Who are the Native Americans? Native Americans were descendants of the first people to live in America. They are very spiritual people and have many of their own beliefs. They are people of respect. They respected the people in their village and most definitely respected the land they lived on. They had lived in America thousands of years before the Europeans came. Christopher Columbus came to what he thought was the Indies in 1492. This was the first interaction with two totally different cultures. Columbus made friends with the Native Americans in hopes to find help in his journey. By Columbus’s second voyage more Europeans wanted to see the Americas. They started traveling to the new land.As the Spaniards started to invade the Americas, the Native Americans experienced exposure to new diseases, slavery, loss of their religion, and loss of their land and possessions. In 1593 de Soto lead an expedition to the new land. The Native Americans welcomed them but later understood that the Spaniards were not to be trusted. de Soto thought of the Native Americans as savages and obstacles getting in his way.The Native Americans continued to lose their land and their lives as the Spanish invasion continued.
