1. Native Americans coming and going ( forced) 

- Coming across the land bridge (10,000+)

NatIve Americans coming

- Came on land bridge~during ice age when ocean levels were low; came no later than 23,000 years ago...came as one massive group in search of food 

-Once here they went from Alaska all the way down to South America 

Native Americans Going

-The Europeans etc. lied, stole, cheated to get the Native Americans out and their resources 

-Killed off buffalo

-Indian Removal Act (trail of tears 1830's-40's) ~ forced out of the south-east territory to Oklahoma(Indian Territory) 

-"Civilize and Christianize" ~ George Washington 
-This waged war

Explorers

- Colombus; sailed for Spain. Never hit USA (went to Cuba, Haiti, South American)

- Vikings came 500 years before Colombus, but didnt survive

-Magelin; first person to sail the world (proved the world was round)

-Ponce De Leon; Florida

-Quartez; Destroyed Aztecs 

-Pizaro; Took over Incas 

-Cabot- sailed for Englans; first one to really said farther North

-Nado- almost explored to Iowa & Canada area, and Sir Frances Drake

-Explorers were after money/gold

USA didn't have a lot of gold so it turned to sugar cane, slavery(working on sugar cane plantations and then eventually to tobacco), etc. anything to make them money. This eventually led to colonization

Colonization

-No longer abt $. Now it's about staying in America and living

-Line of demarcation ( All new lands found to the west go to Spain and the East Portugal; that's why South America speaks Spanish & Portugeese heavily)

-British, Spain, France, & Portugal were the leaders in the way the new world was shaped 

-Georgia, North and South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Conneticut, Massachusets, New Hampshire, Rhode Island (Maine was apart of MA)

Revolutionary War

1754-1763 FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR: War between Colonists VS French (indian allies). After this war was over Greta Britain was in massive debt. So GB started enforcing taxes "no taxation without representation"

1763 PROCLAMATION:  About the proclamation line ( on the map- indian territory) taking away rights from colonists from where they want to live

1767 TOWNSHEND ACTS 

1770 BOSTON MASSACRE: GB troops started firing and killed some Boston residents

1773 BOSTON TEA PARTY: Throwing tea off ship dressed as native americans because of the unfair taxes

1774 INTOLERABLE ACTS: In response to Boston tea Party. Closed Boston Harbour until they payed off tea debt that they wasted, took away charter of MA (ruled by King), British troops could force Bostonians to quarter them in their homes, if British soldiers do anything bad they could only be tried back in GB

1774 FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CONGRESS

Declaration of Independence- great primary source document for why the Revolutionary War was started

Three major parts of the declaration:

1) People have rights which they are born with 

2) Complaining about GB king

3) Declaring independence 

Un-United States of America; 

Articles of Confederation- wanted the state government to have the majority of the power. They were like "13 little countries" . Were here for the first 7-8 years of our countrys history

Weaknesses and why it failed:
- Could tax; but didn;t have the power to enforce it

-No military 

-One vote per state

-Unanimous vote to change anything (law)

-No national courts; No executive branch 

Consitution:
Is a 'living document' meaning it can change 

What is US Constitution?

Living document, sets up our government (3 branches, protects our rights

Why did the Constitution come about?

They were unhappy with the articles

What is Separation of Powers?

Separating powers into three branches. So we don't have a king; one person making all the desicions

What is the Checks and Balance system?

Every branch has checks on all the other branches; to make sure one branch doesn't get more power than any other branches. A balance of power (avoiding the whole king thing)

Ex; Impeachent - to the president, veto - president does

Who was the" Father of the Constitution"?

James Madison

What are the two houses of Congress?
Senate & House of Represenitives

Number of senators? How's that determined?
100- two per state

Number of Represenitves? Hows that determined?
435-Population of state

Length of term/Age requirement?
6 Year term- Senate- 30YRS (AR)

2 year term- House of Represenitive - 25yrs (AR)

What powers does congress have?

Make laws, set taxes, declare war, override vetos, borrow money, regulate international trade, print money, accept any presidental appointment to the supreme court

Length of Presidents term?

Four years

How old do you have to be to be president?

35 years old, natural US Citizen

Whats longest amount of time a president can now serve?

10 years

Which President served the longest?

Franklin Roosevelt, 12 years (would've been 16 but he died)

What powers does a president have?

Sign laws into bills, commander in cheif, head of military, grant pardons, final call on nuecular war, makes treaties, appoints federal officers, ensure laws are exucated/enforced, 

Qualifications for being a US Supreme Court?

No qualifications- age, experience, etc. 

How do they get their job?

Get appointed by the president of USA

How can they lose their job?

Impeach, die, retire

What powers does the US Supreme Court have?

They decide whether laws are constitutional or not, has the final say when it comes to laws, can hold cases sometimes

Amendments:

27-most recent 1993. Also called the Bill of rights

8/31- Friday

The west in US history has changed- from Mississippi River - to - Rocky Mountains - to - now, California. 

Manifest destiny is this right that some Americans belived that we had the God given right to take over the land that now belongs to America and even thought some of Canada and Mexico.  

Lousiana purchase= Iowa, Dakotas, Louisiana, Arkansas, parts of Colorado, Oklohoma, and Kanasas 

We purchased Alaska from Russia. Also Texas was its own country for a little bit. 

Lewis and Clarke- explored much of what was the Lousiana Purchase. Took 2 years, 4 months, and 10 days.
