Tuesday-

We are getting an assignment to do outside of class. 

Causes of cold war- Difference of opinion. The red scare of 1919. Both thought there systems were better. 

Red scare 1919- U.S. was afraid that communism would take over. 

We believed Stalin was a bad guy. He killed tons of his own people. He lied to us about promising free elections in eastern Europe. Which he ended up taking over and not doing.

Goals

-Wanted to stop the spread of communism

Promote democracy throughout the world.

Wednesday-

Domino Theory- If communist control one nation the rest of the world will soon follow

Policy of Containment- A policy that was used to prevent the spread of communism.

Truman Doctrine- United states would help other countries if they were affected by Communism. Targeted toward Greece and Turkey.

Marshal Plan- 1948-1952- Program where U.S. gave money to European countries so they would build a democracy not communist.

Brinkmanship- The pushing of a dangerous situation to a brink of disaster without going to far.  

Massive retaliation- Using strong weapons to create an explosion to destroy opposing side. 

Massive Retaliation Mutual Deterrence- Nuclear weapons are a defensive weapon. We have them simply so other countries don't attack us. 

NATO- North Atlantic Treaty Organization- Friendly alliance between 28 nations to try and stop Communism.  United States Great Britain Canada France

Warsaw Pact- An alliance between Soviet Union and Easter Europe countries to counterbalance the alliance NATO.  Not still around. 

Thursday-

Iron Curtain Speech- Winston Churchill gave a speech saying that the continent of Europe is has a figurative curtain through it. There was 2 Europe's free and communism. 

CIA- They are doing the dirty work for the U.S.. They protect us from threats.  

KGB- CIA of the Soviet Union. 

Peaceful Coexistence- Soviet Union theory that capitalism and communism does not work together but they can still be by each other.  

Destalinization- Taking out stallin and what he believed in.  Everything he was in or had part of was pretty well destroyed.

Detant-  A french word using release form tension usually in political situations. Soviet Union and America. 

Perestroika- the fixing or stabilizing of economic or political system.  1980's

Glasnost- Describes the policy of openness. Open for people to have more say in government. 

Nuclear Powers of the World- America France Russia Chine United Kingdom. Others- India Pakistan North Korea Israel Iran.

The biggest nuclear bomb would take 15,000 of them to destroy earth. 

Nuclear Test Ban Treaty-  The banning of all nuclear test practices. Signed U.S. Soviet Union United Kingdom. 1969 

Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty- Prevent spread of nuclear weapons and technology. Promote peace. Further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament.1970

 Strategic Arms Limitations Talks- a Treat that was singed in 1972. They were feared that the missiles could carry nuclear bombs. Soviet Union U.S.

Ballistic Missile Treaty- Only could have 100 of these missiles. Soviet Union and the U.S.

Missile Defense System- The missile defense system is a system ina country of anti missiles that willl destroy the war head before it is able to reach the target country and save thousands of lives.
