On September 11, 2001 at 8:46 a lot of us remember what we were doing. I was in Mrs. Chipmans first grade class at New Park Elementary School. We remember because at that time, in New York City, the World Trade Center was hit by American Airlines Flight 11. Earlier that morning 19 terrorists had hijacked four planes from Newark, Boston, and Washington D.C. The hijackers had stabbed the piolets and flight attendents to take control. Two of the planes went to New York, one to Arlington, Virginia, and one headed to Washington D.C. So the first plane hit at 8:46 and the second at 9:03 both at the World Trade Center. The third plane hit the Pentagon at 9:38 and the last plane crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania at 10:03. The plane was headed for the White house or the Capital, but the passengers found out and fought the terrorists.
The attackers were part of a group called al-Qaeda, which is a group of terrorists who attacked civilian and military places in many different countries. The total number of people they killed including themselves was 2,993. Most of them were at the World Trade Center. 90% of the people in the World Trade Center were at or above the attack so some people jumped from the building. There are many pictures of one man falling and they think they know who he is but it isn't proven. His sister said that when she saw the pictures she said to herself that if she didn't know any better that he was her brother. Her and her other brother later tried to identify the body and believe it was their brother.
I feel so sorry for all of the families that lost a loved one that day. It was a horrible thing to do and I don't know why someone would ever do it. I think we should always remember those people and the rescusers and honor them. Their stories should never be forgotten.
