Cuban and soviet governments were building bases for nuclear missles
Along with the help of the US governement armed forces the CIA with a trained force of Cuban exiles attempted to attack southern Cuba abd overthrow the Cuban government of Fidel Castro (bay of pigs invasion)
Around August 1962 is when the US started to suspect the Soviets of building missile bases in Cuba
The Idea od placing nuclear missiles in Cuba came from Nikita Khrushchev.
Wanted to counter the lead of US in developing and deploying strategic missiles
Also Wanted to protect Cuba from more US Sponsored invasions.
Photographic Proof of missile bases under construction were caught by a US U-2 Photoreconnaissance on October 14th
US considered attacking Cuba but instead settled on a military quarantine of Cuba.
