Chapter 10 DiscussionsPurchase of Alaska-Russia and Great Britain were having problems. Canada didn't want anything to do with Alaska because it was just a bunch of snow and ice. Alaska was purchased by the United States and became a state in 1959. People thought that this was a bad purchase, but it turned out to be the best purchase ever made by the U.S.Puerto Rico-After the Spanish-American war the US Military automatically ran Puerto Rico. The U.S, changed the currency to the the US dollarForker Act- got rid of theCommon Wealth- U.S. citizens. They can move freely throughout the United States. They don't need passports ect. Have to pay taxes. Can join the U.S. military. They are protected by the US laws. The only thing that they can't do is vote of the U.S. president because they are not a state. They don't want to be a state because they don't want to lose their spanish heritage. They don't want to become independent because of the benefits of being a U.S. citizen.U.S. Control of Cuba-Last major colony to gain independenceTeller Amendment- was a joint resolution and it garenteed Cuban independence after the war.Platt Amendment- Says that we will be in their country until they pass this amendment. we were in control of cuba with strings attached. The Platt Amendment conditions= 1. Cuban can not make treaties with forign countries. 2. United States could go to Cuba whenever we felt we needed to. 3. Cuba cannot go into debt or borrow any money from other countries. 4. Cuba had to lease or sell land for a navel base. The U.S. was first interested in Cuba because of navel base, sugar and tobacco plantations, and a place to eventually build a canal in Central America.Treaty of Relations- a good neighbor policy. The Amendment ensured US involvement in Cuban affairs, both foreign and domestic, and gave legal standings to U.S. claims to certain economic and military territories on the island including Guantanamo Bay Naval Base at the southeastern end of Cuba and has been used by the United States Navy for more than a century.We will continue with The Box Rebellion of China tomorrow.
