Today we picked topics for Chapter 11. Sarah and I are partnering up and doing a blog on U.S. Neutralities in WWI. Explain how we dealt with war. Not during the war but, before or after. We are gonig to finish talking about Chapter 9 today and probably start Chapter 10 discussions tomorrow.Republican Party Split- the Republicans split into old-grand. The Bull Moose Party- republicans would split votes between TR and Taft. r the progressive party as a third party candidate. The split guaranteed a democrate to win because the republicans would split vote between Taft and ............ William Howard Taft was the current President. Woodrow Wilson was a Democrat. Eugene V. Debs was a socialist.11. What did progressives do to regulate businesses in the United States? TR believed that there were good trusts and bad trusts. He ended up breaking up about 40 trusts(monopolies) and called himself the “trustbuster”. He helped settle the 1902 Coal strike in which miners got a better pay and a nine hour work day. Passes the Elkins Act and Hepburn Act which requires railroads to be fair and just in their pries and practices. Passed the Meat Inspection Act- 1906. Passed the Pure Food and Drug Act- 1906. He didn’t do much for the African-Americans. Wilson’s Accomplishments- passed the Clayton Anti-trust Act (1914) Labor Unions were given the right to exist. Also strikes, boycotts, picketing ect, became legal. FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION was established in 1914. ---investigated companies for monopolistic.12. What was the progressive’s philosophy on tariffs? Describe the Federal Reserve System. Before there were no taxes just tariffs. Tariffs were a tax on imported goods from other countries. American businesses benefited from tariffs because it jacked up the prices of foreign products high so people were forced to buy products in the country. 16th amendment 1913 set up income tax. Tax was at 6% which is way less then what it is today. Federal Reserve System- a system of banks that other banks bank at. There are 12 main Federal Reserve Banks. But there are 25 branches. People would run to the bank to get their money before it closed. It also prints money, and lowers interest rates, which encourages people to buy more stuff.18. What did local government do to reform itself during the Progressive Era? Local Government had issues with political machines. They would take power away from one person and give it to a group of people. Many people would run the city instead of just one.
