Teddy Roosevelt- TRHe was born into a wealthy family-1858.Had asthma as a child. He was sick and weak.He became a good athlete in boxing and wrestling. He liked to ride horses and admired cowboys. He went to Harvard.TR served as a US Civil Service Commissioner from 1889 and 1895. He became the commissioner of the New York City Police. An Assistant Secretary of the navy, Governor of New York, and Vice-President of the US in 1901. Served as president in 1901. He wrote history books. Teddy Bear- TR was on a bear hunt in Lousiana.ACCOMPLISHMENTS- he used his personality, popularity, and power of persuasion to get what he wanted. He believed that the federal government was there to give everyone a fair chance. That they wanted to help the common person.William Howard Taft- was a presidential failure. He wasn't energitic and well liked. He wasn't athletic and couldnt speak in front of a crowd as well. Taft promised to lower tariffs but actually increased many. Supported speaker of the House which was Joe Cannon. Joe Cannon was an anti-progressive and he was also racist. Taft became a fan of Cannon but it seemed wrong because he was hand picked by TR.9. What did the progressives do to make food and drugs safer for the people of the United States? Meat Inspection Act- 1906 Meat was needed to be inspected before sold. and Pure Food and Drug Act- 1906 -10. What did progressives (TR) do to help conserve land and resources in our country? Newlands Act- 1902 sold western land and made dams which allowed irrigation. Dams and such were built to help with farming. He was a Conservationist. The Progressives didn’t help African-Americans. Because of Racism.11. What did progressives do to regulate businesses in the United States? TR believed that there were good trusts and bad trusts. He ended up breaking up about 40 trusts(monopolies) and called himself the “trustbuster”. He helped settle the 1902 Coal strike in which miners got a better pay and a nine hour work day. Passes the Elkins Act and Hepburn Act which requires railroads to be fair and just in their pries and practices. Passed the Meat Inspection Act- 1906. Passed the Pure Food and Drug Act- 1906. He didn’t do much for the African-Americans.
