13. Describe the impact aid organizations had on our country. Before the Progressives, there weren't any aid organizations or anything that helped the poor, besides churches. Aid organizations such as the YMCA and the Salvation Army helped the poor. The Salvation Army held soup kitchens for the poor. YMCA provided social services, healthful sports, and recreation for people as well as libraries, sponsored classes, and swimming pools and handball courts. Also, the social gospel (a church organization where Christians just wanted to help the poor) and settlement houses were very helpful as well. Today, there are many aid organizations around the world.17. Describe the major social changes that affected women during the Progressive Era. Women started changing in the progressive era. They decided that they were able to do things just as well as men did. They started going to college, and working outside of the home. Women became their own person rather then just the wife of a man. Before the progressive era there were unequal rights before men and women. Men did all the work outside of the home and women were to clean and cook. Women earned the right to vote in elections. Which was the 19th amendment14. What is socialism? How was it started in the United States? Socialism- economic system in which the government ownership of businesses to make things equal overtime. Progressives didn’t want to take money from the rich and give to the poor. Eugene V. Debs ran for presidential election 4 times. He ran once when he was in prison. He was a socialist and he thought that capitalism would ruin countries because of small population.Four Goals of Progressives1. Protecting social walfare (helping poor people) Aid organizations- YMCA, Salvation Army, Libraries, Soup Kitchens, Settlement houses, Social Gospel, educations, swimming pools, ECT.2.
