Today in US History. We continued answering chapter 9 questions.1. What did the progressives do to make the workplace safer?-The workplace was very dangerous and people worked long hours. Worker’s Composition made workplaces much safer. Guard rails were put up and new lights to make it brighter. OSHA, established in 1970, investigated businesses to make sure that they were safe.2. What did the progressives do to help end or reduce child labor? Pressured politician’s to pass the Keating-Owen Law- people cannot take food or anything made by children across the boarder line. Only if children made it, if anyone else made it, they could. Now, 15 year olds can work 20 hours a week. At places like: movie theatres, amusement parks, ball diamonds, bowling alley, grocery stores, ect. Cannot work more then 20 hours a week because education is more important.3. What is prohibition? Prohibition was when the sale and production of alcohol was banned. Why did people want prohibition to come about? People drank alcohol all the time. Especially immigrants. WCTU- Women’s Christian Temperance Union- They had to deal with drunken husbands. They wanted to get rid of alcohol because they would eliminate violence. What tactics were used to bring about prohibition?4. What did progressives do to help workers reduce the number of hours they had to work? Child labor was banned completely. Focused mainly on Children and Women. Muller v. Oregon- When the Supreme Court decided that women couldn’t work more then ten hours. Bunting v. Oregon- When the Supreme Court decided that men couldn’t work more then ten hours. Now, people usually work 8 hour days.7. What did progressives do to bring about better wages for workers? Never hired a specific person. Hired kids because they could pay them less then adults. For a 15 hour workday, men got paid $1.75 a day and the money was used for food. Progressives pushed for laws and passed the minimum wage laws in 1938. Equity Pay Act- tried to equal the pay of men and women.
