Today in US history we continued working on the chapter nine questions.5. What did progressives do to make our country more democratic? Rich, white, males had power. The 17th amendment was the direct election of US senators meaning that the people choose. The secret ballot- was secret so that people couldn’t pressure you on your vote. Recall- If the governor was doing a bad job the people could hold a recall which was a vote. Initiative and Referendum- when the common people could issue a bill and if it received enough signatures, it would go on the next ballot. This was state by state, when people voted, it would pass if the majority of people wanted it.6. What is women’s suffrage? What approaches did women use to gain the right to vote? Men were the only ones in the government. They thought that women were supposed to stay home to cook and clean. Mary Wollstone Craft spoke out about how men and women should be equal. In 1847, they got together to try to push for the right to vote which was called Falls Convention. African American Men gained the right to vote before women were. This made women very upset. The three prong strategy was another way women tried to get the right to vote. When they went to the government to ask, men still didn’t stick up for them. Men were worried that women would take their jobs and they wouldn’t have anyone to do the work at home. The 19th amendment 1920 gave women the right to vote. NAWSA- National American Women’s Suffrage Association. Susan B. Anthony was involved.7. What did progressives do to bring about better wages for workers? Never hired a specific person. Hired kids because they could pay them less then adults. For a 15 hour workday, men got paid $1.75 a day and the money was used for food. Progressives pushed for laws and passed the minimum wage laws in 1938. Equity Pay Act- tried to equal the pay of men and women.now i have to go to basketball :( :( :(
