Ch. 8.4:-Explain what people did for entertainment in the late 1800's and early 1900's.Play sports, go to amusement parks, ride bikes, baseball, boxing, and tennis. Horse racing, and amusement parks at Coney Island. People liked to go shopping and read books and newspapers. Mark Twain.Dawn of Mass Cultures-Middle Class Americans from cities began to go see a change. They stated building amusement parks, and city parks. Cities wanted to make it less congested so they built parks for recreation.Coney Island- located in brooklyn new york. It became a beach resort after the Civil War. There was many activities such as horse racing, amusement parks, and less than friendly entertaiments such as three card monte.Bicycling- biking became popular in 1885 with the first ever "safety bike". Biking was first a hobby of males, but then females started getting interested.Coca Cola- created in 1885 by John Pemberton originally as a type of wine. It was redone and became nonalcoholic.Boxing- was popular and people started listeding to it on the radio.Radios became popular in the 1820s. Baseball became popular in 1870s people also listened to baseball on the radio and fans got involved by rooting for their hometeams.New ways to sell goods- department stores, public ventors, chain stores such as Woolworth Chain, nationwide advertisements.New Literacy- Mark Twain became popular in the time period and newspapers started to develop in cities.Following Cody's presentation, Mr. Bruns gave us tips on how to get a better grade in his class.
