Debt Peponage- African Americans and Mexicans went into slavery to pay off debt.-Explain the significance of Plessy v. Ferguson. --- a legal case for the fairness of segregation to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1896. Legally set of segregation in our country for the next 60 years.Seperate but equal- whites and blacks had to have equal services but could still be segregated. Resulted in legal segregation for close to 60 years. Seperate but still had equal rights. Seperate and UNEQUAL!!Reconstruction- blacks won back rights. The rebuilding of the south after the civil war. Whites still didnt believe that whites and blacks were equal.Voting Restrictions- people had to take a literacy test which told if they could read and write. Blacks were given a different test which was in a different language. The officials could choose to pass or fail anyone. Poll tax- the tax that the blacks had to pay to vote. The Grandfather Clause- if a man, his father, and his grandfather had been able to vote before Jan. 1st 1867.Jim Crow Laws- laws to seperate whites and blacks in the public such as bathrooms, drinking fountains, ect.
