6.2- Railroads Span Time and Space

During the mid to late 1800's, railroads made expansion possible and very easily in the U.S. This helped settlers that wanted to move Westword for many reasons. Most of the expansion was that farmers wanted to accuire goo, cheap land. Some wanted to come and start businesses, and shops. Others were very adventerous, and wanted to mine for gold and other precious materials.By the mid 1800's, railroads had expanded west of the Mississippi River. Then a few years later, they expanded to the Missourri. Ten years later, they expanded as far as California. This shows how one idea can expand to a whole network of transportations. One major problem with the railroads, is that when trains arrived in one town, it was suppose to be noon. This was a major problem because many people assumed noon was when the sun was directly above their heads. This lead to the idea of time zines, so there wouldn't be any confusion. There were 4 major time zones, the west, mountainous, central, and east. Eventually, the whole world addapted time zones based off of the idea the railroad companies had.

  • In my opinion, this is very interesing. If many immegrants wouldn't have worked for cheap labor, it wouldn't have been built. Thays what made it. Also, many towns were built because of railroads. In my opinion, railroads are important in the past and today
