Nuclear Arms Race
The Manhattan Project was caused by the fear of the Germany in the 30s. Stalin found out through spies that worked for the U.S. government. The Soviets didn't have much uranium to build the nukes. The U.S. detonated the first hydrogen bomb in November of 52. The Nuclear Test Ban Treaty was banned testing above ground.
