The Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall went all the way around West Berlin. In 1989 the communist party was sort of overthrown. Prevented the people of East Berlin from going to West Berlin.
Nixon's visit to China
Nixon was the first president to visit China and tried to persuade them not to turn communist. Nixon met with Mao in China. The U.S. intended to pull all of its troops out of Taiwan. After this we recognized China as Communist China. The Republic of China is Taiwan. The PRC was communist China.
1970s Peace Attempts
Detente is a period of relaxation. China wanted to go into detentes because of what they did to Nam. They didn't want the Soviets to be mad at them. The USSR wanted to go into detente because their living conditions were poor. They were aware with the decreasing relationship with China. The U.S. wanted to go into detente because there were better ways to contain communism than what they had done previously. We were aware of the expenses that go with the weapons. Peaceful relationship with the Soviets would be beneficial. SALT 1 was all about the Soviets and us trying to reduce our nuclear weapons. SALT 2 provided more limits on nuclear weapons but this didn't pass.
