Chiang Kai-Shek was a nationalist leader of china, was corrupt and weak, competitor was Mao Zedong, and was supported by the US since the other option was communist, Mao Zedong was communist and attracted the common people to him and was an experienced guerrilla leader, communist party was originally communist, China had a uneasy peace amongst each other and after the war, the Communist attacked the Nationalist party, forcing their leader, Chiang Ki-Shek to retreat to Taiwan, the Cultural Revolution was the name given for Mao's reform that would have everyone in China working for the greater good of China, didn't work out since some thought they were better and knew best, Tienanmen Square was a protest on April 14, 1989 and was led by students and other educated people, caused by the death of Hu Yuatong,

NATO, when the Soviets became a threat western Europe didn't want to becommunist, the US started bringing the countries in to talk, the Treatyof Brussels, in 1948, was an expansion of peace between Britain andFrance, Belgium Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, United Kingdom allsigned the treaty, they wanted the US to, but we didn't, North AtlanticTreaty was signed by the same five as well as the US, Canada, Italy,Portugal, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland, this is the treaty that startedNATO, gave military support for all signers, was a Defensive alliance,still around today, De-Stalinization started when Stalin died and Nikita become the leader, his wants to rid Stalin's influence, took down all monuments of Stalin, ended when Nikita came out of power in 1964, Russians were dissapointed that it didn't do much, Peaceful Co-existence Between Soviet Union and US, wanted to be able to live peacefully with each other without war, Nikita came over to America several times to discuss peace.

Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev had the Berlin wall built in 1961, the wall blocked all of west Berlin, which wasn't under Soviet Control, the wall was emplaced to keep people from moving away from communism, the wall Divided east from west Berlin, wall contained democracy, wall was 15ft high with barbed wire tops, had patrols and guard dogs, Ronald Regan encouraged Mikhail Gorbachev (leader of USSR) to allow people of east Germany to make own government, November 9, 1969, East Germany announced the wall was open, the fall of the wall symbolized the reunification of Germany,

h. How the Cold War ended.


5. Students will understand the causes, effects and major events of the Korean Conflict.

6. Students will understand the causes, effects and major events of the Vietnam Conflict.

7. Students will understand the causes and effects of the Persian Gulf Wars as well as the War on Terror.
